Eat Your Words was born out of confusion whilst I was studying for my Marketing degree. To toot my own horn, I was really good at Marketing but something was off. The course was constantly prepping us for this hotshot agency, the bro-marketing, soul-killing kind of marketing. And as a country-bumpkin whose parents own a small business, somehow it wasn’t floating my boat per se.
The word marketing has some nasty associations. Wall-street-esque men in suits all plotting to manipulate the public into buying something that isn’t nearly as good as it claims to be. Even as a marketer I have the same image. And it’s why my university days were 3-years of conflict and confusion about my career.
For the whole of my second year, I was facing the ultimate question. And it wasn’t until I was in complete inner conflict with myself that I realised; I can still do marketing and work with businesses I love, use and have ethical green flags. Those businesses are small (but mighty!) independents that when it all boils down to it just really care about the people they serve.
So, in my final year, I fired up Eat Your Words with a mission to help small brands feel more comfortable with the world of marketing. I wanted to be the bridge that made marketing okay again (not just some sleazy word only for C-suite meetings) and be a beacon of hope that you didn’t have to spend a fortune in a dodgy agency or burn out by doing absolutely everything yourself.
But I know where I’m going now. I have a clear direction and foundation to build from. You’ve helped me see what I loved in my business, and what I didn’t. So now I have so much clarity moving forward. I’m not afraid to make big business decisions or start offering something new because I know I have the foundations and abilities to make it work. You gave me the confidence to build a business that works around me and what I enjoy first, and then use that to help my audience.

Kate’s not just amazing at words. She’s amazing at marketing, data, research and strategy. When you combine those skills, you know that every word she comes up with is backed by well-thought-out reasoning, designed to make your copy deliver. We have worked with Kate for 2.5 years now and it has been incredible to witness her growth over the years. She puts so much time, energy and genuine passion into everything she does. She’s not afraid to tell you if your ideas and messaging are weak, and she’ll work her damned hardest to transform them into something well-worthy of stopping the scroll. Everybody in our company is obsessed with her and the work she does. 20/10, would recommend.

Having a document that we can just lift copy from has been a revelation. To be honest, it’s just been so lovely embracing our hobbitcore selves, and realising that the people who get it *get it*, and we love that. It just felt like we could fully brain dump and get all our thoughts and ideas out there, and you were picking up all the pieces and making them actually make sense. We’ve had such lovely feedback and so much more engagement on social media since we started incorporating our authentic messaging in our captions, it’s been so rewarding to see.
